What you will find in this knowledge base about the BV
A BV (the Dutch private limited company) raises plenty of questions. What exactly is a BV, and what sets it apart from a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) or an NV (naamloze vennootschap, the Dutch public limited company)? What does it cost to set up a BV, and which steps do you go through at the notary? How much salary must you pay yourself as the director-major shareholder (DGA), and how do you calculate that in 2026? On this page you will find an overview of all topics that are relevant to you as a (future) BV owner.
Every topic has its own page with the full explanation, the current rules and concrete figures for 2026. Below you can read briefly what each topic is about and which link takes you straight there. Do you have specific questions about your own situation after reading? Then you can request a quote without obligation or book a free 30-minute introductory call.
What is a BV? The BV, in full the besloten vennootschap, is a legal form in which the company capital is divided into shares that are not freely transferable. As a shareholder you are in principle not personally liable for the debts of the BV; the company is a legal entity in its own right. That makes the BV attractive for entrepreneurs who want to shield risk or who want a tax advantage on their profit. Read more about the meaning, features and structure of a BV.
Setting up a BV: costs, step-by-step plan and the role of the notary. Setting up a BV starts at the notary, who executes the deed of incorporation and registers the company in the Commercial Register (Handelsregister). Nummerix does not handle notarial deeds, but we do guide you through everything that comes after: setting up the bookkeeping, starting up the tax obligations and filing the first VAT (btw) and corporate income tax (vennootschapsbelasting, VPB) returns. The incorporation costs differ per notary office. See the full step-by-step plan and an overview of the costs of setting up a BV.
DGA salary in 2026: rules, amount and calculation. As the director-major shareholder you must pay yourself a salary that meets the customary salary rule (gebruikelijkloonregeling) of the tax authority (Belastingdienst). In 2026 specific minimum amounts and calculation methods apply, depending on your situation and the profit of your BV. Paying yourself too little leads to additional assessments with interest; paying yourself too much needlessly drains your liquidity. Read everything about the DGA salary in 2026, including the rules for newly started BVs.
Customary salary DGA: historical overview per year. The standard for the customary salary has been adjusted several times over the years. Whether you want to understand how the rules have changed, or want to check whether your salary met the requirements in an earlier year: a historical overview gives you something to go on. See the historical overview of the customary salary DGA per year.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a BV and how does it differ from a sole proprietorship?
A BV (besloten vennootschap, the Dutch private limited company) is a legal entity with its own capital and its own liability. As a shareholder you are in principle not personally liable for the debts of the BV, unlike a sole proprietorship, where you are liable with your private assets. The BV also has a different tax structure: the profit is taxed with corporate income tax (VPB), while as a DGA you pay yourself a salary that falls under payroll tax. Read more in our explanation of what a BV is.
What does it cost to set up a BV in 2026?
The costs of setting up a BV consist of notary fees for the deed of incorporation and the registration in the Commercial Register at the Chamber of Commerce (KVK). Those costs differ per notary office. The minimum capital of the past (18,000 euros) has not existed for years; you can set up a BV with a share capital of 1 cent. Nummerix does not handle notarial deeds, but we guide you fully through everything that comes after the incorporation. See the full overview of the costs and the step-by-step plan on our page about setting up a BV.
How much DGA salary must you pay yourself in 2026?
As the director-major shareholder you are required, under the customary salary rule, to pay yourself a salary that the tax authority considers 'customary' for the role you perform. In 2026 a statutory minimum applies that is set each year. The amount depends on your role, the profit of your BV and comparable market salaries. Paying yourself too little leads to an additional payroll tax assessment with tax interest. For the exact calculation and the rules for newly started BVs: see our page about the DGA salary in 2026.
Can I switch from my current bookkeeper without hassle?
Yes. We arrange the handover. Once you approve the quote, we contact your current firm ourselves and request the records. In most cases you hardly have to spend any time on it. And at Nummerix you are never tied in for a long period either.
What does the bookkeeping for a BV cost at Nummerix?
You pay one fixed monthly amount excl. VAT, set in advance based on your BV structure, the number of transactions and any payroll administration. That amount includes the financial administration, all VAT returns, the corporate income tax, the annual accounts (jaarrekening) and the payroll administration for the DGA. There is no additional billing afterwards. Request a quote without obligation and you will receive a concrete proposal within one working day.
Is a BV also sensible if I want to protect my private assets because of box 3?
Whether a BV is tax-efficient in your situation depends on the size of your assets, your personal tax position and the plans around box 3. This is a trade-off we can never answer without a conversation. Book a free 30-minute introductory call: then you get an answer for your specific situation, without requesting a quote straight away.
